Photo gallery - Median barriers
Introduction: A median barrier is a highway traffic control device used to separate lanes of traffic. The purpose of a median barrier is to prevent undesirable traffic movements. The primary benefits from the use of median barriers are increased vehicle capacity and reduction of traffic accidents. However, this is accomplished primarily by the elimination of left turns which restricts vehicle access to and from properties located adjacent to the highway. Left turn restrictions can reduce the market value of adjacent property especially when the adjacent property is developed for commercial use. Compensation has been awarded in some cases where median barriers were installed. This gallery includes photos showing several examples of functioning median barriers.
Location: Surrey, British Columbia

Fleetwood

1 Looking south-east along Fraser Highway from the intersection at 152nd Street in the Fleetwood neighbourhood. A landscaped median barrier is plainly visible in the middle of Fraser Highway. Note the shopping centre access point located on the right-hand side of Fraser Highway behind the 60 km speed limit sign. Vehicle access is restricted to right-in/right-out turns only because the median barrier eliminates left turns at this location.

4 Looking west towards 152nd Street along a driveway that permits right-in/right-out access only between a shopping centre and 152nd Street. A median barrier is visible in the middle of 152nd Street. The median barrier prevents south-bound traffic on 152nd Street from entering the shopping centre and south-bound traffic from leaving the shopping centre.

An extensively landscaped median barrier is located in the middle of 96 Ave. At this location five driveway access points to residential properties are visible on the left (south) side.
